Hello. It’s Lent. At the end of Lent, on Good Friday, I watch my favourite movie, Ben-Hur, a tale of the Christ, which culminates in Jesus’ crucifixion, and which played a key role in my coming to faith.

Ben-Hur has a title that sounds like a name with a pronoun. I’m also called Ben, but I’m non-binary, which is to say quite a way along the transgender spectrum. But not Ben him or Ben her, but more of a Ben Them

In this Lent series, over forty talky pieces, I want to speak about faith, about practical praying, and about the fact that The Bible can actually be really interesting and surprising if you take the time to read it aloud. And I’d like to talk about my extraordinary gender circumstances, and how transitioning has been a blessing to my prayer life and my relationship with God.

I hope you won’t find this combination to be too self-absorbed, for a Lent course, but for years I’ve felt I’m really not honest and open enough about either my faith in Jesus, or my transgender identity.

This Lent, join me through these forty ruminations, poems and vignettes, plus Sundays. It will be candid and enthusiastic. It’s Ben Them: A Tale of the Christ!
