As I’m writing this, it is Trans Day of Visibility. By the time this goes out tomorrow it will be International Lemming Day, Bandcamp Friday and Poisson d’Avril but I like to believe transgender folk, their lives, their struggles, their joys and accomplishments can be seen at all times of year. I’m not sure I’m terribly visible, but what with Ben-Them I guess I am more conspicuous than I was, and I’m glad of that. Better out than in. In previous years I was mealy-mouthed, and had only risibility, and that, of my own devising.
Trans Day of Visibilty is by far my favourite of the two Trans Days of Something, the other one being Transgender Day of Remembrance, November 20th, which is a necessary but bleak day of mourning. Not everyone is given room, encouragement and basic human dignity, alas, and realising you’re trans, knowing you’re trans, coming out, transitioning and living your best trans life can be hard, can be rough. Can be wonderful, a time of potential and change, and plans and expectations seeming to go in surprising directions.
But today - or yesterday, or the 31st of March is and was and evermore shall be a day of visibility. See trans folks and be glad of them and be glad for them, and kindly stand against political fearmongering, which would, in the most boring example, keep trans people from ever using a bathroom outside of their homes.
Enjoy things by transgender folk who make stuff. Personally I’d heartily recommend Austen Lionheart’s ‘Transgender and Christian’ YouTube series, which looks deeper into the Bible, and into theology around all manner of facets of trans life, than Ben-Them has thusly done. I found it a great support when coming out to myself and to the world.
Check out ‘What the Trans’, which is an excellent transgender news and current events podcast, hosted by Michelle Snow and Ashleigh Talbot - I’m one of their regular audio-editors, and the podcast is consistently engaging and informative. It’s mainly made for a trans audience, but I’m sure some of you are such an one.
And I recommend Steel City Queer History, a group who research and present Sheffield’s LGBTQIA history - both written history, and collecting oral history from the past century. [steelcityqueerhistory.wordpress.com](http://steelcityqueerhistory.wordpress.com) has some great, short vignettes from myriad contributors.
There - some past, some present, and there is plenty of trans future.
By the way, I decieved you at the start. Today is not International Lemming Day. That was two days ago, so, you just got April pranked! We’re two thirds of the way through Lent, dear listener. Thank you for your patience.
Here you can find their music - solo work, and a Doctor-Who-
and-Cheese double-concept concept-album by The Potential Bees (who are a two- or three- person band), which forces both concepts into every song).
You can also find Ben Swithen on Youtube, but why would you even?...more
