about

There aren't enough songs about John the Baptist! There, I said it.

This one draws mainly from chapter 1 of the book of John (no relation).

lyrics

And this is the record of John,
when the Jews sent priests and Levites
from Gerusalem
from Gerusalem
to ask him, Who art thou?
And he confessed, and denied not;
but confessed, I am not the Christ.
And they asked him, What then?
And they asked him, What then?
And they asked him who art thou?

Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not.
Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
When they came forth from Gerusalem,
John Baptist told them so.

Then said they unto him, Who art thou?
Who art thou?
that we may give an answer
To them that sent us
What says thou of thyself
He said I am the voice
Of one crying in the WILDERNESS
Make straight the way of the Lord,
As said the prophet Esaias
If ye can hear my word

They which were sent were of the Pharisees.
And they asked him, and said unto him,
Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not
that Christ, nor Elias, neither prophet?

John answered them, saying,
I baptise with water:
but there standeth one among you,
whom ye know not;
whom ye know not;
(This is the record of John)
(whistling)
He it is, who coming after me
Is preferred before me
The latchets of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose

These things were done in Bethabara
beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
And this is the record of John
This is the record of John, also the end of this song

John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins
If it's good enough for J the B, it's good enough for me

and his meat was locusts and wild honey, he came neither eating nor drinking
If it's good enough for J the B, it's good enough for me

Herod sent, and beheaded John in the prison (which is where he was living at the time)
If it's good enough for J the B, it's good enough for me

John saw a spirit descending like a dove. Also, he was bearded.
If it's good enough for J the B, it's good enough for me
